Deaf Haiku
By Tom Willard "One day I sat down with a scratch pad and wrote a haiku. And then I wrote another. And another. And soon they were pouring out of me as if they had been waiting patiently somewhere inside for quite some time. ... I ended up writing quite a few, only some of which had to do with deafness. I can't say for sure why I was attracted to the ancient art of haiku, but I suppose there was something challenging and comforting about the need to have five syllables in the first line, seven in the second and five in the third. Challenging because you had to find a way to make the words fit; comforting because the form offers limits in a seemingly limitless world. Some were funny, some were sad, some were ironic and some were just plain weird. Before I knew it, I had enough to fill up a book. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them." --
